A novel bio-inspired organism form.
The resulting sculpture is a form that twists, bulges, swells and bends in and around itself as if internal and external forces have been at play in its own unique growth and expansion. The surfaces are organic in nature and play with not only simply smooth flowing contours but are also interspersed with jagged "growth marks" and pimples and bulges that resemble the often imperfect real organic world. The sculpture is intended to be viewed and experienced from all angles and presents slightly different personalities from its various sides.

Scale and manufacturability.
The sculpture was developed with a fluid scale in mind so that it might suit a gallery or indoor residential setting along with a larger outdoor garden environment. The manufacture for the two scales would likely be varied accordingly. Smaller scale would be proposed to be lost wax cast from bronze and then paint applied, whilst outdoor a fibre glass and again hand paint applied texture would be proposed.

Developing a 3D object from a 2D World.
Michael's painting works are striking in both colour, texture the challenge was to translate these works into the sculptural 3D world. The design design process looked to ensure that the quality of form and shape was retained along with the colours and graphic textures that are characteristic of the works. An initial conceptual interpretation of the works was to create a 3D tank which places a select and varied number of "creatures" within to create a link between the rectilinear limits of the canvas into the 3D world with the rectilinear limitations of the cube and to also offer a similar experience for the audience with the various sides of the cube serving as 2D canvases to look through.

3D Printing and prototyping.
The two rounds of sculptures were sampled and prototyping using low cost FDM printing with the larger final sculpture being fabricated from multiple sections to fit the printer volume. Simple filler and sanding was carried out to complete the work ready for paint application and or lost wax casting in bronze.
